Text to CAD — Describe It, Get an Editable Parametric Model

Draftr's text-to-CAD workflow converts a plain-language description into a real parametric solid model. You write what you want; Draftr builds the geometry, shows it live, and hands you a model you can keep editing — by hand with direct tools or by describing further changes.

This is the gap text-to-CAD fills: you have a clear idea of a part but don't want to spend an afternoon in Fusion, SolidWorks, or FreeCAD sketching it from scratch. Describe it once and start from a working model instead of a blank workspace.

What to Put in the Prompt

From Prompt to Solid in Four Steps

  1. Write the description in plain English.
  2. Draftr generates a parametric solid and renders it in the viewport.
  3. Refine it — describe a change with Quick Edit, or reach for a direct tool like pad, pocket, or fillet.
  4. Export STEP, STL, or GLB.

Text to CAD vs. Text to Mesh

A mesh generator gives you triangles you can print but can't cleanly edit. Draftr produces parametric solids with an editable feature history, so "make the hole 6mm" or "add a rib along this edge" is a real modeling operation — not a re-roll of the whole shape. When you're done, STEP export means the model opens as editable geometry in other CAD tools too.

Great For

One Tool, From Idea to Printable Solid

Draftr is a native desktop app for macOS and Windows. The geometry runtime ships inside the app, so it works offline right after install — no cloud round-trip to model a part. Every AI generation and edit lands as a versioned step in a non-destructive draft stack, so you can go back, change an earlier operation, and rebuild everything downstream without losing your parametric intent.
